Filipino Teleseryes vs. Korean Dramas

Written by Kring Elenzano on August 11th, 2011. Posted in Film and TV, Humor and Crack, Korea, Pop Culture

I know many people who enjoy watching local teleseryes and Koreanovelas. I may not be one of them but I sure am surrounded by family members and friends who literally spend hours each day following the lives of the dramas’ characters. I recently gave ‘Secret Garden’ a chance and watching it inspired me to this. With “extensive research” and hours of reading synopses, I came up with a chart, which showcases and differentiates the cliches of Filipino teleseryes and Korean dramas. Yes, I made this shit myself on Photoshop and I don’t know why I suddenly have so much time in my hands (I don’t).

Admit it, you know it’s true.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against TV dramas, I just love films a lot more. People have told me my love story is so much like a Koreanovela. BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Trust me, it’s not. I doubt Jimmy will kill himself so he could donate his eyes for me (Stairway to Heaven) or you know, wear expensive, fancy tracksuit while kissing the whipped cream off my upper lip.

This does not happen in real life.

Ha ha ha! This had me laughing really hard! I have to admit that I enjoy watching Korean Dramas a lot (I’ve seen over a hundred dramas and I’m watching Spy Myeongwol and Scent of a Woman now). But yeah, there are cliches that pop up ever so often.

I think a major difference between Korean Dramas and Filipino Teleseryes is that Korean Dramas have an expected time of ending (normally around 16 to 20 episodes if its a mini-drama). Filipino teleseryes can go on forever with characters dying and coming back to life over and over. Although there are also longer Korean dramas that reach over 100 episodes. But their ending dates are also set.

By the way, if I was a Korean Drama writer then I would definitely write a drama about you and Jimmy. I’ll call it “Secret Burden”! Ha ha ha! (^0^)

I love films too. Drama series are too long. O.o
But you can’t deny the fact that it makes us especially Filipinos have something to do other than killing each other by hating othersLOL

OMGWAI??? Really??? I can’t even finish Secret Garden (but I feel like I have to just ‘coz I started already~) Actually, I only get to finish JDramas because they’re all only 11-13 eps short. And oh, Meteor Garden. Everything else, Mexican, Filipino, I just… kennot! XD

I hope Jimmy is the “burden” LOL!

^ TRUE! But some are really good~ I saw the first ep of City Hunter in Korean and the production value was WOW! Some Pinoys have too much time in their hands. We need more jobs. ;)

Hi Kring!  You’ve outdone yourself with that chart… I yet have to get into Koreanovelas (maybe you can recommend a good “entry level” series?), but the part on Necessary Scenes is hysterical!  And I agree, there always seems to be a long-lost child in the plot somewhere… Hahaha!

We were actually in touch a while back through our Youtube Channels — Ours is TheCheeryCordial.  Last April, my partner Anthony and I started our blog as well (www.helloballoon.com) and would love love love for you and Jimmy to drop by.

More power to us and other interracial couples!  Hahaha!  You guys are adorable, by the way!  :)

Will check out your blog now! More power to you and Anthony~ :D

so true! haha sometimes you just can’t help but compare the k-dramas with teleseryes!   minsan sa k-dramas nafrufrustrate ako, wish ko na lang na maglabasan na ang goons just like in teleseryes! sa teleseryes naman grabe ang waterworks! ang haba ng mga crying scene at aping-api talaga ang bida tapos dun na sya magsisimulang magbago & maghiganti!

my mom noticed din sa k-dramas and movies na bakit daw laging naglalasing ang mga girls tapos ipi-piggyback sya nung guy pauwi.loooove this post !!! <3
