How I Dealt with Getting Turned Down For the Prom

Last weekend, our high school batch had a reunion for the first time in a very looooong time. It has been so long, I was totally shocked at how much some of them has changed and hasn’t changed!  I won’t divulge, however, what  year I had graduated from high school cough2006coughTROLOLOL but to say that it was a nostalgic moment is indeed an understatement.

In the conversations with my former batchmates, many of whom I haven’t seen in a while, so much memories that I have long forgotten came rushing back in. I knew, I just knew I had to share some of them here, particularly my pseudo-heartbreaks. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you probably know by now that  1) I was so ugly back in the day and 2) I have been through many unrequited loves before I had my first and only boyfriend. I’m sure many of you could relate to my stupid and laugh-worthy stories, one of which involved a guy named JEHZREEL. Bitch, please. I won’t even bother concealing his identity hahahaha!

He was one of the guys who turned me down in high school and he was also there in the reunion. Looking back, we can laugh about it now. Afterall, he’s married already, with a pregnant wife and we’ve both grown up but when I was 15 and naive, everything seemed like serious business.

I had a crush on Jehzreel for a couple of months. It all started when we acted together in a play. I just had my first major heartbreak some months prior and was not ready to majorly “fall” again. He was a nice boy-next-door. Very normal. Not boisteroous and arrogant, not a wallflower either. And he was cute, too.

From the very beginning, he had been aware of my “feelings” for him. How could he not be? Apart from the fact that I had no qualms about telling him, I also gave Jehz a freakin’ yellow rose and a poem for Valentine’s Day and dedicated random sweet shit for him on the PA system during our school fair. You know, like a boss. But the climax of our story was during our junior prom.

Prior to the prom, I went up to him to personally ask him if he could be my date. It was during our recess and the good ole’ Jehz agreed right away! “Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!”, I thought to myself though to be honest, I think I may have said that out loud while gay-ly flailing. I did my usual high school break time stuff – ate, bought something at the admin office, chatted with friends.

And then, just before the bell rang, one of his friends approached me and basically apologized in behalf of Jehzreel. Apparently, he couldn’t be my date for the prom because he wants and has to be with his barkada that night and he was too ashamed to turn me down face-to-face.

I smiled, nodded, told his friend it’s okay before nonchalantly walking away. I was about to go up the stairs when I saw my gay friend, Michael. He was surprised to see me so… fazed.

“What happened to you”, Michael asked.
“Jehz turned me down for the prom… He said yes then took it back.” I answered in a zombie-like state and then ate the piece of paper I was holding. YES. YOU READ THAT RIGHT. ATE THE MOTHERFUCKING PAPER!

Michael began to freak out and was making me spit the paper (which was newsprint, by the way) but I would hear none of it. I continued chewing. He then called our other friends who were all like “Kring! Kring! What the hell is wrong with you?! Spit that out!” but I instead SWALLOWED THE WHOLE THING. Again, like a boss.

Yes guys, that’s how I dealt with getting turned down for the prom. Jehzreel apologized and eventually explained himself and we remained friends throughout high school. But Jehzreel never knew about that incident until last Saturday and he was was soooo sorry! Hahaha and I was like “Betcha regret it now! *flips hair*”.
