It was around January when I saw him for the first time. Star World relentlessly replayed American Idol so even on an early Saturday evening, while working out, I got to watch the show. AI auditions are normally entertaining and I would watch it for the humor as did many people. Suddenly, a guy came into the audition room, looking like any other hopeful, without a hint of flamboyance or star factor. He was the last guy from the Savannah leg and was bland as a piece of bond paper.

And then he sang Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. I stopped running. His voice and awkward mannerisms made him look like he had electricity going through his body. J.Lo said my thoughts out loud. Pretty good, I thought. Randy made him get his guitar and he sang his unique rendition of MJ’s thriller. I knew at that moment that I was gonna watch the the entire season.

Phillip Phillips was the guy’s name and funny as it may sound, I believed even then that it was a “showbiz” name – like Madonna or Beyonce Knowles or even Lady Gaga (as opposed to Stefanie).

I haven’t cared about Idol since the Jasmine Trias season. Sure, I followed season 4, too up until Carrie won. I also rooted for both Davids of season 8 and would occasionally watch performances of idol finalists in the past years. However, only now did I actually give a shit again and I didn’t even know why then.

I would’ve lost track of Phillip during the Hollywood and Vegas legs if not for Heejun Han and his hilarious personality. I loooooved that guy (not because he’s Korean but that helped too, sue me) and I enjoyed watching him quarrel with the obnoxious cowboy dude. I realized at that time that wow, he was in the same group as Phillip Phillips and they went all the way to the Top 24 together!!! I didn’t know they were best friends in the competition until Heejun was informed that he was in the Top 24 and P2 was the only person who was there to congratulate him.

The tissue tears. Oh, how Koreans love those.

PhilJun bromance. Shipping it since Feb 2012.

Even as early as the Top 24, I was a solid Phillip Phillips and Heejun Han supporter and only on the Top 12 did I even learn that a Pinoy that made it that far, too, just like Thia last year. My top 3 in the top 10 had always been P2, Han and Jay.

AI13? Excited much, Kring???

I have only followed three idols on Twitter. You know who they are.

I knew that Hee wouldn’t make it that far in the competition because of his attitude and well, others really had more star factor. But I wanted Jessica and Phillip for the finals. Jessica, because she was just so damn vocally talented and Phillip because he was such a great entertainer and a true artist. Though I missed some episodes, I always looked forward to watching him perform and my personal favorites would have to be his rendition of “U Got it Bad”, “Volcanoes”, and “We’ve Got Tonight”.

Since Jessica was half-Pinoy, 95% of everyone I knew was rooting for her. Though I really liked her, too, I loved Phillip’s style more (perhaps because I was used to watching birit queens in my country). In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever liked an American artist that much since the early 2000′s. I didn’t expect that P2 being up against her would be a terrible idea though.

He had been called a WGWG (white guy with guitar) and people predicted that he’d win just because of the voting demographics. I felt insulted as a fan who appreciates his musicality because let’s admit, the guy knows his shit and can make it big with or without Idol. Haters have even said that he won’t make it big ‘coz he won the crown and that Jessica would have a better career. Really? And these mostly came from fellow Filipinos. TOTALLY DISAPPOINTING. I wonder if people would support Jess that much is she was white. Or if they’d say those things against Phillip if he joined another season and was not up against a Pinoy. Someone I know had been called “anti-Filipino” for supporting Phillip. REALLY??? Is that what you call Filipino pride?

Honestly, I didn’t want Phil to win anymore. It’s undeniable that Jessica deserved the title but more importantly, I just wanted people to shut the fuck up and so Phil could walk away and do his thing. But he did. He won. He fought through his kidney problems and wore the clothes that he wanted and even Jessica knew it beforehand and was genuinely happy that he won. Why can’t others be? She would have an amazing career, guys. No need to be belittle his capabilities.

You can go home now, dear… Congratulations!

Dear Phillip,

I truly wish that you’d do much much much better than your predecessors. Please continue to be stubborn and stay true to your self and your roots. Do not let this merciless industry dictate what kind of artist you should be and I look forward to hearing your original music. Though you’re worthy of the title, I believe you deserve more than American Idol. I’m excited to see you, Jessica and Heejun in Manila! Haters to the left.

Supporting you since DAY 1 with much love,

Kring

ps: I’m not the biggest fan of “America” per se and most of you know that music-wise, I am highly influenced by Asian artists. And while the whole US and PH were going crazy over the AI results, China was slowly but surely taking over the world. DEMMET.

Kring’s Note: This piece was written by my friend, mentor, producer and former professor, Ms. Faye Martel. I don’t normally re-post articles written by other people here but there’s exception to every rule. “This Hunger Game Called Life” is one of the best dissections of the film/book that I have read and, albeit short, it made me ponder about the story, its lessons and my own life.

~~~
Two years ago, my daughter bugged me relentlessly to buy her this book Hunger Games. Based on the title alone, I knew it was full of violence and I didn’t want to feed her mind (she was just 12 then) with such things. But, as I said, she did this relentlessly until I, well, relented (only after I researched what the book was about). And now everyone knows that it’s such box office hit. I watched it with her on its 1st day of regular showing (only because it was her exam week, if it were not, we would have one of those who watched in the midnight screening the night before), and I really liked it. Not really enjoyed it as I believe the premise of the movie can stand for a lot of things. At first, I thought it could be a great reference movie for my BroadComm class for when I explain camera work, but then as then as the story progressed, I discovered the Hunger Games is a TV show and it can be a better reference for the whole Broadcasting industry. At this point I was thinking that I have to get a DVD of this movie when it gets out. Then I felt a deep pang of sadness when Katniss volunteered for her sister and I realize that the Hunger Games may also be about life and how our children are launched in to it when they graduate.
Life, is like one big Hunger Games.
And all of us are Tributes in this Hunger Game of Life. We can be like the Careers, who spend their whole life training for the Hunger Games. They are expected to win. They are better fed and in the battlefield, their strategy is “to get hold of all the food early on and work from there” (Collins, 2008). Or we can be like Katniss and Peeta, whose goal is to just stay alive until the end. But is that all we want to be? Mere survivors than winners? Should we be like the Careers and spend our whole life training for it? As parents, should we train our kids like Careers? Feed them, spoil them, give them all they want and then expect them to win?
I am now reading the book and am happy with all the helpful tips it offers about surviving this Hunger Game called Life.
In training center, trainer Atala points out not to ignore the survival skills and how the ability to ANTICIPATE will determine who the winner is. To anticipate is to expect, predict, be aware of something that will happen. It requires that one actively looks forward to something.
Before the games, the Tributes were fed well with food, were given more than just comfortable rooms to rest in and the tribute enjoyed this while they can. Learn to appreciate the good things happening to you, take in all the happy thoughts you can from the experience because you’ll never know when it’s going to end.
The best advice I got from the movie was from their unlikely mentor, Haymitch Abernathy:
“They’ll put all sorts of stuff right in front. Right in the mouth of the Cornucopia. There will be a bow. But don’t go for it… They’re trying to pull you in and it’s not your game. Turn. Run. Get to high ground and then find some water.”
That’s the heart of life right there. How life will dazzle you with what you think you want, but not with what you need. You might scramble, even hurt yourself in the process of getting what you want. But… don’t go for it. They’re trying to pull you and it’s not your game. Turn. Run. Get to high ground. High ground. Look up to get to your high ground. Pray.
I also love it that most of the words of wisdom here are from an unlikely, to the point of being repulsive, character, Haymitch Abernathy. Yey! for unlikely mentors! Find your Haymich Abernathy, he may not be perfect, trained his whole life for it perfect, find someone that has actually lived life, committed mistakes and learned from them. And yes, Woody Harrelson was perfect for this role.
And the best advise from him?
“Make sure they remember you.”
And that, my dear, is how you win, and not merely survive this hunger game called Life.
~~~

The original piece can be found here. If you liked it, your comments, thoughts or messages to the author would be very much appreciated. I felt like the whole world needed to read this and I do hope you’d share it around as well. Thanks, madam for writing this! *hugs* Love you!

Yesterday, I attended a special screening of Boy, the highest-grossing New Zealand film of all time and one of the films lined up for the New Zealand Film Festival 2012 at the Shang. The story is set in 1984 and revolves around Boy, a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson so much that he imagines his absent father, Alamein, to be just like the singer. When Alamein returns to reveal he’s been at jail for robbery, Boy has to face the man he thought he knew.

Boy is a simple yet well-written movie, which was written and directed by Taika Waititi, who also happens to play the father, Alamein. Indeed, he’s one talented man. It’s funny, it’s nostalgic, it’s beautiful… but more importantly, it’s honest and in a way is a perfect movie to represent to New Zealand (we all know that NZ has wonderful scenery, which was highlighted in the film). The visuals reminded me of those serene Japanese films that I love like A Gentle Breeze in the Village.

More than the tight script, the actors, especially the children did a wonderful job. I particularly loved “Rocky”‘s effortless yet heartfelt performance.

I had a chance to have a little chat with Mr. Andy White of the Embassy of New Zealand and he explained that the objectives of this film festival are to showcase the talent of the people working in their film industry and show the diverse culture of their country. All of the films are good, he said but if he were to recommend his favorites, he said we shouldn’t miss Sione’s Wedding and The Whale Rider.

Here’s a complete list of the DIVERSE films that are lined up for the New Zealand Film Festival 2012 at the Shang (click to enlarge):

I’d surely watch Mr. White’s recommendations… When? Here’s the schedule:

I think Feb 24. Yup, I’ll watch on Feb 24 if there are no other schedules…

The festival runs on February 23 to 28 at the Shang Cineplex. It’s on a first come, first served basis so make sure you’d be there way ahead of the scheduled screening. I really love the Shang for hosting all these festivals for free! It’s indeed a treat for all the film buffs like moi~
